Before Intravenous Anesthesia Sedation
- Nothing to EAT or DRINK after MIDNIGHT. If your appointment is in the afternoon, nothing to eat or drink 6 hours before surgery. The meal the night before should be a light meal and not at 11:59 PM. Being nervous delays the emptying of the stomach and we want to avoid that.
- Please arrive at least 30 minutes prior to your surgery. If you arrive later than 30 minutes prior to the appointment, we reserve the right to reschedule your appointment or work you back into the schedule as we see fit.
- Please wear loose-fitting clothing with SHORT SLEEVES, and secure, flat shoes. Sweatshirts have tight sleeves which interfere with the IV and should not be worn. No slip-on sandals or flip-flops should be worn the day of surgery.
- A responsible adult must accompany the patient to the office, REMAIN IN THE OFFICE during the procedure, and drive the patient home. A parent or guardian must accompany a minor.
- If you take routine oral medications, please check with Dr. Fain prior to your surgical date for instructions. Most medications can be taken prior to surgery with a sip of water. If you take blood thinners, please let Dr. Fain know at the time you schedule your surgery.
- If you have an illness such as a cold, sore throat, upset stomach, or upset bowels, please notify the office.
- The patient should not drive a vehicle or operate any machinery for 24 hours following anesthesia.
- No smoking for at least 12 hours before surgery. Ideally, cut down or stop smoking as soon as possible prior to the day of surgery.
- Contact lenses, jewelry, and dentures must be removed at the time of surgery.
- Do not wear lipstick, excessive makeup, or nail polish on the day of surgery.
